Do I need any dance experience?
Absolutely not! It is sometimes more difficult to "undo" some previous dance knowledge. Our Personal Dance Trainers make learning to dance fun and easy. In no time you will be dancing the basics.
How do I get started?
We start all our new students on an Introductory Program consisting of 2 – 25 minute Private Lessons and 1 Social Practice Party, all for only $30.00. You will be introduced to 4-6 different dances that you will use in most social situations. We recommend that you keep your lessons as close together as possible, taking at least 2 lessons a week if your schedule allows it. After your Introductory Program our prices vary since all of our students’ programs are designed to fit our students’ learning ability and desire. Contact That Dancer’s Place to set an appointment for your first fun filled and exciting private lesson and we will take it from there.
Do I need a partner?
Absolutely not! As you dance around the floor, you will meet people from every walk of life. Some are here with a partner and many are not. There are some couples who take lessons separately due to their personal schedules and then are able to enjoy dancing time together when they go out. If you come in as one of our single students, your Personal Dance Trainer will be your partner for your Private lessons. Our Group sessions and Social Practice Parties will provide plenty of opportunity to meet other students with the same interests and goals.
How long will it take for me to learn?
Usually within 1-2 weeks, you will have all the basics of up to 7 of the top social dances, depending on your rate of learning and how often you are able to come in for lessons. Then we can tailor a program to fit your future dancing desires and interests.
What is a Private lesson?
Private lessons consist of one student or a couple working with one instructor. These lessons provide the most benefit and ease for learning since all material is catered to the individual’s learning ability and desire. A couple may have one or two instructors, according to preference. With private instruction you will learn at your own pace, and never trail behind in a "class" format, or have that awful feeling of being held back from progressing forward. Our studio receives many clients who have attempted to learn in a class setting elsewhere and then come to us to get good, solid private instruction. Your Private lessons can be scheduled anytime during business hours. 10:00 AM - 10:00 PM Monday – Friday and Saturday’s by appointment.
What is a Group session?
A Group session consists of several students learning from one instructor. Students work primarily on patterns and technique. Your Personal Dance Trainer will inform you when you are eligible to attend Groups and which Groups are best for you. Check your studio's calendar to find this month’s schedule.
For beginners and intermediates, we also offer group or semi-private lessons. If you can gather a group of at least 8 individuals, we will structure a course of groups for you.
What is a Social Practice Party?
Our practice parties prepare you for dancing socially, allow you to apply material learned in your lessons without the pressure of the public eye upon you, and provide an opportunity for our students to have fun, learn, and dance! At our parties, we dim the lights, serve refreshments, and have a fabulous time dancing together in a safe, smoke free environment. Students have the opportunity to dance and meet other students, as well as the instructors. Check your studio's calendar to find this month’s party schedule.
Before each dance, an announcement is made to help identify the style of dance. Dancing in such a friendly, relaxed environment eases the stress of dancing in front of other people and builds confidence. This is also a way to meet new friends who share your love of dance.
What is a guest party?
Special Guest parties introduce new people – friends of students to the studio activities, where they can enjoy the new experience of being among local people who actually know how to dance well. Plus, students whose friends enroll to take lessons add free bonus lessons to their curriculum (a way for the studio to say "Thank you!"). Music and refreshments abound and a good time is had by all!
What dances do you teach?
Our goal is to prepare you to dance with confidence in any social situation. We teach 18 different dances. The dances that we teach are Fox Trot, Waltz, Tango, Rumba, Cha-Cha, Swing, Salsa, Samba, Mambo, Hustle, Push Pull, Merengue, Western Swing, Texas Two-Step, Bolero, Viennese Waltz, Quickstep and Paso Doble.
How should I dress for my lesson?
Comfort and class is what we encourage. Wear something comfortable that won't inhibit movement. Comfortable leather soled shoes dance best on our ballroom floor. Any type of sling-backs, flip-flops, tennis shoes or boots are discouraged. Dance shoes, CD’s and apparel are available for purchase at the studio.
Is it difficult to learn to dance?
No, not at all! Our Personal Dance Trainers make learning to dance fun and easy. It will take time to learn the various dances and a repertoire of steps. A steady approach, consistency with your lessons and regular practice will produce visible results in a short period of time.
Can I focus on 1-2 dances at a time?
We discourage this type of learning! It is just as easy to learn 2-4 dances as it is to learn 1-2, since all the dances are interrelated by the 4 basic elements of dance. There are some very basic elements you will learn on your very first lesson that will show you how easy it is to learn more than one may think possible. In most dance situations, you will need to know a variety of steps in a multitude of dances.
Where will I use this style of dancing?
Everywhere! We teach a style of dance that is used in any social situation. Although many students come to us initially to learn for a special occasion, for example, a wedding, cruise, bar mitzvah, charity ball, etc., they find many other times for dance in their personal lives. Some dance at picnics, on the beach, at Summerfest, birthday parties, in their living room and the list goes on and on. Until you take the first step to learn, it is hard to imagine the many times you will "step out" into a dance situation. We also provide practice parties for your convenience. Our facility is a smoke-free environment for your dancing pleasures.
How long before I am comfortable in a dance situation?
That depends on you! Everyone has a different sense of comfort. However, this is a school that teaches an art. It is virtually impossible to learn how to play the piano or guitar in just a couple of hours, no matter how good you desire to be. You will not be "socially" comfortable in ballroom dancing in 2 lessons either. You can expect nothing but the best and quickest results from all of the Personal Dance Trainers at That Dancer’s Place.
Why should I take "private" instruction?
Private instruction is the fastest and most cost-effective way to learn ballroom dancing! Line dancing, ballet, tap, jazz, etc., are a totally different style of dancing; all of these can be danced alone. Ballroom dancing is partner dancing, whether you learn with a teacher as your "learning" partner or a significant other, private instruction is the best way to learn.
